Disaster Relief Update
Wednesday, October 12, 2011
“Listen to counsel and receive instruction so that you may be wise in later life. Many plans are in a man's heart, but the LORD's decree will prevail,” Proverbs 19:20-21 (HCSB).
Disasters are never in our plan and in fact if we could, we would plan for them not to happen. In this fallen world, disasters have been happening and will continue to happen. Southern Baptists volunteers will continue to respond to meet the needs of the suffering in the midst of disaster as long as God tarries. These volunteers take time that they had planned to use for vacation or retirement and give that time back to God. They share their motive in serving others and they share the good news of the Gospel from His word. We may make plans but we also know the truth found here in Proverbs that, “the Lord’s decrees will prevail.”
Southern Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers from Arkansas, California, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas (SBTC & TBM), and Utah/Idaho continue to serve residents who have seen their communities devastated by fire. Volunteers are helping homeowners sift through the ashes of destroyed homes. Others are involved in; feeding, chaplaincy, operations, assessment, shower and laundry ministry.

So far these volunteers have logged 16,290 hours of volunteer work, saving the residents more than $325,800.00. These volunteers have provided 9,123 meals and cleaned 117 sites. They have shared the gospel with 68 individuals, provided 1,095 showers, and washed 424 loads of laundry.
Teams are scheduled to be in the area through October and into November.
In addition to the work volunteers are doing in response to the fires, Baptists from several states have been helping Texas ranchers with hay to feed animals in the midst of a worsening drought.
The Missouri Construction team is working in Japan this week. A team of volunteers from Canada, California and the Northwest Conventions will travel to Japan later this week. Pray for these volunteers as they help Baptists in Japan assist residents in Miyagi Prefecture with rebuilding their homes.
