Disaster Relief Update - Thursday, August 20, 2009
"Go to your people, the exiles, and speak to them. Tell them: This is what the Lord says, whether they listen or refuse to listen" (Ezekiel 3:11).
A "word from the Lord," this is what Southern Baptists bring to a disaster. We are told to tell them, “this is what the Lord says.” We are to tell them this, “whether they listen or refuse to listen.”
Kentucky Flooding
Teams from Kentucky, Alabama, Mississippi, Ohio, and Texas Baptist Men are responding to flooding in Louisville. Coy Webb, Kentucky state director, reports that approximately 1,000 homes have been flooded. At this time 61 mudout and repair jobs have been completed. Most importantly the gospel has been presented six times, resulting in one salvation. There have been two other decisions and 89 ministry contacts.
New York Flooding
Teams from, Mississippi, New England, Pennsylvania/South Jersey, and Southern Baptist Conservatives of Virginia are responding to flooding in Silver Creek, south of Buffalo. An incident command team is set up at First Baptist Silver Creek. Approximately 1,000 homeowners have requested assistance.
2009 Hurricane Season
The Atlantic hurricane season has heated up. “Claudette” made landfall in the panhandle of Florida. “Ana” weakened before she did any damage, and it appears that “Bill,” although very powerful, may miss the eastern coast of the US.
