Disaster Relief Update - Friday, August 28, 2009

“I will attend to you and will confirm My promise concerning you to restore you to this place. For I know the plans I have for you…” (Jeremiah 29:10b-11a).

What a wonderful place to be, right in the middle of our Lord’s promises and plans. There are no storms too large or days too long to keep Him from showing us His love and care.

Kentucky Flooding

Teams from Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, and Texas Baptist Men are continuing the work in the Louisville area. The Alabama volunteers have returned home. Teams are working out of the state convention office, Brookview Baptist Church, and St. Paul Missionary Church. They have reported 159 ministry contacts, three decisions, 585 volunteer days, and 126 jobs completed. At this time no new teams are being requested.

New York Flooding

Teams in New York are working out of First Baptist Church of Silver Creek. To date, 19 ministry contacts, 13 mudout jobs, and 143 volunteer days have been reported through teams from Mississippi, New England, New York, Pennsylvania/South Jersey, and Virginia (SBCV). Paul and Tommie Palmer from Utah/Idaho are serving with Incident Command. No new teams are being deployed at this time.

Tropical Storm “Danny”

Presently we are watching “Danny” as he moves through the Atlantic with a possible impact on the eastern coast.

Remembering Hurricane Hugo

As the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Hugo approaches, South Carolinians and Southern Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers from across the country are remembering the devastation the powerful storm left from the Charleston coast of South Carolina across the state and into the Charlotte area of North Carolina. We rejoice that out the havoc wreaked by the storm God expanded the ministry of Southern Baptist Disaster Relief exponentially. Growth that began after Hugo intensified again in the wake of Hurricane Katrina which placed Southern Baptist Disaster Relief in a position to respond with one of the largest Disaster Relief forces in the world.  With this position comes responsibility. God does indeed have plans for Southern Baptist Disaster Relief. We must remain diligent in our training and preparation to ensure we are ready to respond at a moment's notice to bring the hope that is in Jesus Christ to those whose lives are torn asunder when disaster strikes.
