Disaster Relief Update - Wednesday, October 14, 2009
"But if it doesn’t please you to worship the Lord, choose for yourselves today the one you will worship: the gods your fathers worshiped beyond the Euphrates River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living. As for me and my family, we will serve the Lord." Joshua 24:15 (HCSV)
Serving the Lord by serving our fellow man - what a difference Southern Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers are making around the globe. God is always at work in the lives of mankind.
American Samoa Tsunami
Terry Henderson and Don Gann are presently in Hawaii. They along with two volunteers from Hawaii, Patrick Underwood and Chris Miller, will travel to American Samoa on Thursday, October 15. When they arrive, they will begin to assess the needs that Southern Baptists can meet. Many individuals, churches, associations, and state conventions are anxious to commit resources. Southern Baptists in American Samoa report that there are many needs, but it is important to send only items that are truly needed. As needs are discovered, they will be passed on to Southern Baptists. Money is always the most needed and most easily used resource in a disaster.
Individuals wishing to make a contribution to the Hawaii Pacific Baptist Convention American Samoa Tsunami relief efforts may do so online through the NAMB Disaster Relief Donations website. Designate your donation for American Samoa by using the In Honor option and type Samoa in the Memorial Name box.
The North American Mission Board has received several calls from individuals seeking information about family members living in American Samoa. The American Red Cross Safe and Sound website is available for person's seeking information about family members living on American Samoa. The website https://disastersafe.redcross.org/default.aspx lists individuals who have registered and provides their current location and contact information.
Philippines Typhoon
Southern Baptist Disaster Relief volunteers have hit the ground running in the Philippines. A Baptist Global Response update reported, “The Southern Baptist volunteers – 29 men and one woman from Texas, Oklahoma and Kentucky – have been helping local residents shovel out their homes, enduring difficult work conditions and the stench of rotting debris. Some of the work has been done in pastors' homes and church buildings while the rest has focused on the community in general. A public school was on the agenda for Oct. 12.”
Georgia Flood
Georgians affected by recent flooding continue to be hampered by more rains. On Monday, October 12, rivers and streams once again crested above flood levels. The forecast for today is more rain and flooding. Eleven state conventions have responded in Georgia, sharing the love and hope of Christ.
You can support the Georgia Flood disaster response with your financial gifts through either Georgia Baptist Convention online or through the North American Mission Board's Disaster Relief Fund online.
