Chapel Service

Preparation: The Chaplain/Minister should consider the setting he is in when preparing for the service. Dress casual, blue jeans are ok, no ties. Note who will be there, drivers come from many different spiritual backgrounds. Your basic message is Jesus, but many will already have a close relationship with Him they have come to be fed.

Setting: The setting is casual, because of that you may have people come in during service or interrupt with a question. Let the Lord lead you in these situations. What seems to us as a negative can turn out to be positive. Realize that drivers come from different time zones, so communicate

Arrive to the truck stop early so drivers know your there. Personal contact is important, go out and invite people to come for service. Have signs in key places to let drivers know when services are going to be held. Make announcement on intercom, if available. Put fliers on trucks, if you have permission to do so.

Order of Service:

  • Welcome
  • Drivers expect about an hour. If they leave usually it's because of time.
  • Opening prayer
  • Music two or three songs
  • Note you may or may not have instruments. If your have one available some drivers play guitar.
  • Prayer requests and prayer (This gets them involved)
  • Special Music (If available)
  • Message Remember you congregation
  • Invitation: Depending on your setting this can be done by drivers coming forward or show of hands in response, to indicate their decision. Confession is always encouraged for any decisions. Make contact with all who have indicated decisions after the service.
  • Sharing/Introduction time: During this time drivers can introduce themselves and may give a short testimony.
  • Closing prayer

The Chaplain/Minister and any other assistants should be prepared to stay and talk with drivers who need a listening ear or have responded during the service. Material should be available to assist with the spiritual growth of the believer whether new or maturing in their walk with the Lord.

Drivers often will ask you to go in the restaurant for coffee or a meal. This can be a wonderful time of out reach, as those sitting around you tend to pick up on your conversation. Some locations invited drivers to their local service, providing a ride to church and back.

Please note this is a suggested format and can be adjusted to fit your setting. You may have a TV or movie room and are restricted to time, so utilize it the best you can. You may have a chapel on grounds this gives you freedom to minister anytime.
