MySpace and Facebook ? A Community of Lonely People
Four Dominate Distinctions: (presented at Origins in 2006)
-
A blurred sense of integration - being what I think I should be.
-
A blurred sense of sexuality
-
A blurred sense of identity - what qualifies one personally.
-
A blurred sense of truth - convince them 'it' works.
Suggestions in using Facebook
- Start a Facebook group that reflects your organization
- Give it a name that says what you are about. Ie. The Meeting That Rocks, Jesus Changed Our Lives at XYZ College, etc.
- Keep the group page well written. Remember, it will pass on updates to its membership and others.
- Invite everyone you can think of and ask them to invite others.
- Write or link this page to dynamic articles and events.
- Use some photos.
- Publicize your events on the page.
- Change information, as often as possible.
- Tell great stories that makes them want to return.
- Advertise on Facebook
- Look on the bottom of your page for 'advertising'.
- The cost is about $5 per 10,000 ads
- The ads appear on your schools facebook members pages.
- Take out the ads in the beginning of the semester and each time you have a large event.
- Do not expect students to link to your site from the ad. Most ads are just looked at and never hit.
- Put a church site in your ad to show connectivity to your ministry base of support.
- Advertise your Facebook site and ad
- Use small signs around campus that have your page on it.
- Put up posters around campus. (You should always keep posters up on bulletin boards)
- Send the facebook ad in your email newsletter.
- Put up signs telling students to join your Facebook group.
Three considerations in using My Space.
-
They need to hear successful stories.
-
Work interpretation not dissemination.
-
Build a great community.
