Exurbs are communities located on the urban fringe that have at least 20% of their workers commuting to jobs in an urbanized area, exhibit low housing density, and have relatively high population growth.

  • As of 2000, 10.8 million people live in the exurbs of large metropolitan areas
    • 5 million (47%) live in exurbian areas of the South
    • 2.6 million (one-fourth) live in midwestern exurbs
  • Nationwide 245 counties have at least one fifth of their residents living in exurbs
    • Louisville metro area has 13 counties
    • Atlanta, Richmond, and Washington D.C. has 11 counties
    • These exurban counties grew by 12% between 2000 and 2005
  • Exurban household types in 2000
    • 27.9% are married with children
    • 32.6% are married without children
    • 8.2% other family with children
    • 5.8% other family without children
    • 20.9% live alone
    • 4.7% other non-family
  • Exurban taxpayers in 2003
    • 34.9% make 0 to $20k
    • 23.8% make $20k to $40k
    • 15.4% make $40k to $60k
    • 17.5% make $60k to $100k
    • 8.4% make $100k and up
