American Samoa Tsunami Response

Southern Baptist Disaster Relief continues to strengthen its presence on the island. To date more than 2,000 gallons of water have been purified. As residents come to water purification sites, disaster relief volunteers help them deal with the loss and fear brought on by the tsunami and over 95 aftershocks.

Hawaii Pacific Convention Establishes Tsunami Relief Fund

American Samoa is a part of the Hawaii Pacific Baptist Convention. The convention has established a fund for individuals and organizations wishing to support the relief efforts underway in the wake of the tsunami that struck the Samoa island chain. Donations may be mailed to the Hawaii Baptist Convention, Samoa Disaster Relief Fund, 2042 Vancouver Drive, Honolulu, Hawaii 96822. In addition, in support of the Hawaii Baptist Convention donations may be made online through the North American Mission Board's General Disaster Relief Fund by using the In Honor option and typing  Samoa in the Memorial Name box. Donations designated in this manner will be forwarded to the Hawaii Pacific Convention for use in the relief effort. President Declares H1N1 Emergency

In an effort to help increasingly overwhelmed health care systems, President Obama signed an emergency declaration on October 24. With 46 out of 50 states reporting widespread flu, health care systems are being inundated with individuals with flu-like symptoms. The CDC reported this week that the distribution of the H1N1 vaccine is slower than desired but the situation is slowly improving. The information on the CDC website is updated often.
