Travel

  • Do I need to make my own travel arrangements? Yes, you need to make your own travel arrangements.
  • Where is Oklahoma Baptist University located?
    Oklahoma Baptist University is located in Shawnee, Oklahoma.  Shawnee is approximately 40 miles northeast of Oklahoma City on Interstate 40.
  • What city do I fly into, if I fly?
    Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
  • When should I arrive?
    The opening session begins Sunday, June 22, 2008, at 1:30 p.m. The workshop ends at approximately noon on Saturday, June 28. NAMB certification as Literacy Missions Workshop Leader will be given only to those who attend all sessions. NO EXCEPTIONS.
    • For those who fly: We strongly encourage those flying to arrive on Saturday afternoon or evening, June 21.
    • We strongly discourage flying in on Sunday morning.
    • Travel time from the airport to the university is approximately 1 hour.
    • DO NOT SCHEDULE RETURN FLIGHT ARRANGEMENTS FOR SATURDAY, JUNE 28, EARLIER THAN 1:30 P.M.
  • How do I get from the airport to the University?
    The university arranges for a van to transport participants.  The round trip cost of the service is $50.00.
    • The university will coordinate the pick-up times depending upon the arrival times of the participants. 
    • You will be given a contact name and number to let the university know your airline’s flight number and arrival time. 
    • They will communicate with you close to the workshop date about the arrangements. 
    • In all likelihood, you will spend some time in the airport waiting for other flights to get in. 
    • Travel time from the airport to the university is approximately 1 hour. 
    • This service will only be available on Saturday, June 21 and Saturday, June 28.
  • How do I get from the University back to the airport?
    The university arranges for van transport back to the airport, depending upon your departure time.
    • Some participants leave immediately after the closing session.
  • What happens if my flight home isn't until Sunday morning?
    You will need to make a hotel reservation near the Oklahoma City airport for Saturday evening, June 28. 
    • There are many hotels and motels near the airport. 
    • The university van will take you to the hotel when it makes one of trips to the airport. 
    • A list of possible hotels will be sent to those who request it.


Housing and Meals

  • What is the cost of room and board (including bed and bath linens)?
    • Saturday to Saturday noon package (double occupancy) $ 268  per person
    • Saturday to Saturday noon package (single occupancy) $ 373  per person
    • Sunday to Saturday noon package (double occupancy) $ 248  per person
    • Sunday to Saturday noon package (single occupancy) $ 373  per person
  • Where will we be staying?
    We will be staying in OBU apartment dormitories.
    • Each apartment has two bedrooms (two beds per bedroom), two bathrooms, a living room, and small kitchen.
    • Half of the apartments are on the second floor.
    • There is no elevator.
    • This is a college dormitory apartment, not a hotel.
    • Bed and bath linens are provided per person: 2 sheets, 2 towels, 1 wash cloth, a pillow and pillow case, and 1 blanket.
    • Toilet paper is provided
    • You must bring your own soap, Kleenex, toiletries, etc.
    • There are no coat hangers, trashcans, TV, or radio.
    • There is a small kitchen with refrigerator, sink, and stove. There are no plates, cups, glasses, silverware, etc.
    • There is a telephone in each apartment. You will get the phone number when you receive your room assignment in the mail.
    • In order to dial a long distance number from your room you need to have a calling card number or a calling card that you can purchase at stores.
  • What things should I bring with me?
    A list of specific items to be used in the conference will be provided in your acceptance letter.
    • Many have found a small, wheeled luggage cart or wheeled carry-on luggage useful for carrying books, notebooks, etc. from the dormitory to the classroom.
    • Plan for packing space for the notebooks, catalogues, and handouts you will receive. Some have brought a small extra piece of luggage for this purpose.
  • Are there rooms with handicapped facilities?
    There are three or four apartments that are first floor apartments with handicapped bathrooms.
    • Those apartments have two bedrooms, but only 1 bathroom.
    • There are elevators in the classroom buildings and in the student center where the cafeteria is located.
  • Can I have a single room?
    You may request a single room, but there is no guarantee you will be assigned one.
    • A single room is not an apartment all to yourself. It is one bedroom in the two-bedroom apartment.
    • Having a single room will depend upon the number of participants.
    • All efforts will be made to meet your request.
    • In the past, we have been able to accommodate everyone who has asked for a single.
    • You will know before you arrive if you have been assigned a single bedroom.
  • Can my spouse come and not attend the workshop?
    Maybe; it depends on the space available in the dormitories.
    • In the past there have been a few participants who have come with their spouse and the spouse did not attend the workshop.
    • The room and board cost for the spouse is the same as for a participant. The spouse, however, does not need to pay the $45.00 registration fee.
  • When can we get into the dormitories?
    A person from the university must be available for key distribution.
    • Usually the dormitories will be available for us to move in on Saturday afternoon, June 21, after 2:00 p.m.
    • On Sunday, the dormitories are not open for getting keys until after 1:00 p.m. Details will be sent to participants.
  • Where will we be eating?
    We will be eating at the university cafeteria.
  • When does the meal service begin?
    Meals begin with breakfast on Sunday, June 22, and end with lunch on Saturday, June 28.
    • There will be no cafeteria service on Saturday, June 21, so you will need to make your own arrangements.
    • There are one or two local fast food restaurants within walking distance of the dormitories.
  • What is appropriate dress?
    We are on a Christian university campus.
    • You will be in class most of the day so comfortable business casual would be appropriate.
    • You will need comfortable walking shoes, umbrella, and a sweater/light jacket in case the building's air conditioning is too cool for you.


Workshop Schedule

  • What will the daily schedule be?
    • Sunday, June 22, 1:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
    • Monday - Friday, June 23-27 8:00 a.m. - noon and 1:45 - 5:00 p.m.
    • Saturday, June 28, 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
  • Will there be evening class sessions?
    No evening classes. However, there will be homework assignments and items to be reviewed and practiced each evening.
    • The only scheduled evening activities will be small group prayer meetings.
    • The prayer meeting time is assigned for the first day.
    • The remainder of the week, the groups set their own prayer meeting times.
