Conserving the Results of Evangelism

Jesus placed a strong emphasis upon conversion, “Ye must be born again” (John 3:7) and discipleship “If ye continue in my word then are you my disciples indeed” (John 8:31).

In the Great Commission, Jesus instructed us to make, mark, and mature disciples by reaching them to observe all He commanded. It is true that evangelism is not complete until the evangelized become evangelistic.

Thus the church as the body of Christ has the responsibility of assimilating each new Christian into the fellowship. Those who lead another person to faith in Christ have a special obligation to assist the new Christian to grow to spiritual maturity. New Christians should be encouraged to become actively involved in Bible study, training and missionary organizations of the church. Every new member needs to become a part of a small group of Christians who will love, pray and encourage them in Christian growth.

  1. Give new Christians appropriate follow-up materials such as Beginning Steps. (Order)

  2. Assign new Christians to encouragers who will work through the Survival Kit for New Christians with them. (Available through LifeWay Christian Resources.)

  3. Encourage the enlistment of new converts in the Bible teaching, training, music and missionary programs of the church.

  4.  Instruct new Christians in stewardship opportunities and explain how the money is used.

  5. Equip new Christians to become effective witnesses for Jesus Christ.
