2003 OMTSJ Archive

This year has not been the best year for optimism. January began with increasing rhetoric against terrorism that culminated in a war with Iraq in April, the economy continued to stumble along, and the jobless rate continued its roller coaster ride through the summer.
But bad news in the media can only mean that Christians have an even stronger message as they offer hope to the hopeless.

This year's On Mission to Share Jesus (OMTSJ) emphasis, with the theme "To Know Him and to Make Him Known," promises to empower more laity than ever before with the skills to be effective soul winners in the remaining months
of this year.

"On Mission To Share Jesus is more than a special day on the denominational calendar," explains Mike Lee, personal evangelism associate at NAMB. "It reflects the very lifeblood of the church."

"As Southern Baptists, one of our primary purposes is the evangelization of the lost and the individual believer's commitment to share his or her faith. On Mission to Share Jesus Sunday is one of those special dates that unite us
around that purpose. "This year's theme summarizes the goal to personally know Jesus Christ and then to make Him known to those in each believer's personal world of influence," Lee adds.

The date that has been set aside on the Southern Baptist Convention calendar is Sunday, October 5.

"It is our hope that you will join thousands of other churches in participating in this evangelistic endeavor. In addition to the materials that are available for the one-day emphasis, there are several options for making this an emphasis that could last for weeks or months," he explains.

At the heart of the On Mission to Share Jesus (OMTSJ) emphasis are two distinct desires. First, that everyone in our nation hear the message of the gospel of Jesus Christ from enthusiastic believers and, second, that those who know Jesus continue to grow in their personal walk with Him.

While those goals seem impossible on the surface, they could easily be accomplished if each Christian took responsibility for his or her own world of influence.
The theme for this year's emphasis is To Know Him and to Make Him Known.

Literally thousands of churches will be joining together and setting aside Sunday, October 5, as a day of evangelistic challenge and commitment.

There are several options that can be used in implementing these materials:

Option One:
Observe OMTSJ Sunday. Included in this special edition of Church Planting & Evangelism Today is a suggested message, theme chorus, drama sketch, order of worship for a blended or contemporary service, and a
reproducible commitment card. This day of commitment is followed by a week of activities for personal spiritual growth, development, and a time of personal witnessing training. See pages 2-5, and 8.

Option Two:
Observe Commitment Sunday (and the following week) along with an additional three week emphasis that includes a weekly message outline and weekly activities that are focused on reaching your family, neighbors, and
community for Christ. See page 10.

  • A Three Month Planning Calendar. See page 3.
