If you\u2019ve ever driven through Lingleville, you probably weren\u2019t there long.<\/p>\n

Located about 85 miles west of Fort Worth and 85 miles east of Abilene, this tiny Erath County town is home to fewer than 100 residents and features a small country store, a volunteer fire department, a post office\u2014and not much more.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s what makes the work God is doing at\u00a0Lingleville Baptist Church\u00a0all the more exciting.<\/p>\n

The church grew from the 55 people who called Ryan Hurt as pastor in 2015 to a congregation of 250 by\u00a0late 2019. COVID hit in the spring of 2020, leading the church to temporarily meet online. Before long, in-person worship resumed, the church continued to offer its services online, and now several hundred people watch via the web each week, in addition to the explosion of people attending onsite, according to Hurt.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe went from 55 folks in 2015 to now running 700-plus\u00a0between two services. It\u2019s been the craziest thing I\u2019ve ever seen,\u201d\u00a0Hurt said. \u201cWe are building a 1,200-seat auditorium\u00a0to accommodate the growth. Talk about the Lord moving on this\u00a0little hill.\u201d<\/p>\n

Until construction is complete on the new worship center and education space, the church will continue to worship in its family life center\u2014where services were moved after it outgrew the sanctuary. Growth continues week after week, Hurt said, as members of the congregation use word of mouth to tell others about the gospel and the church.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a whole section of people out there because I\u2019ve\u00a0invited them,\u201d said Curtis Green, a\u00a0mechanic who has been attending for two years. \u201cI tell them if\u00a0you don\u2019t know Jesus, you need to come to Lingleville Baptist\u00a0Church. The Holy Spirit is in the building. It\u2019s amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rancher Gary Clayton, a member for six years, said he invites people to church everywhere he goes\u2014grocery stores, gas stations, banks. Clayton said the church hosts events frequently, including crawfish boils, father\/son campouts, crochet clubs and family nights, making it a popular center of activity in such a small community.<\/p>\n

The church offers the ministry for people in\u00a0their 20s and 30s, a ministry called Overcomers for those recovering from life-limiting choices, a marriage ministry called Re-engage that meets on Sunday nights and vibrant opportunities for men, women, students and children.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s such an easy church to fall in love with,\u201d Clayton said. \u201cWe have a pastor who is on fire for God and the\u00a0Holy Spirit just moves in our church. It\u2019s a phenomenal\u00a0place.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lingleville Baptist Church has become a center of activity in such a small community, providing plenty of opportunities for people of all ages. Most importantly, the church is using its influence to deliver the gospel to people beyond its city limits.<\/p>\n

The church\u2019s ministry area spreads out 11 miles south to Dublin, 10 miles west to Desdemona and 10 miles north to Huckabay. Hurt said the church\u2019s \u201ccome as you are\u201d atmosphere has drawn people from all walks of life to hear the gospel.<\/p>\n

Hurt was once one of those people. He had a 12-year\u00a0career in country music before a near-fatal car crash redirected his life back to his early\u00a0Christian roots. Though his wife, Melissa, was not raised in church, she knew their lives needed something different following the wreck. \u201cWe\u2019ve got to do something different,\u201d Hurt recalled his wife saying to him, suggesting they go to\u00a0church.<\/p>\n

God took care of the rest, calling Hurt to ministry and allowing him to lead a congregation in Lingleville that welcomes all comers.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s as diverse as you\u00a0can be out here in the middle of nowhere \u2026 famous rodeo folks, Dutch dairymen, recovering addicts,\u00a0lawyers, college students, housewives, truck drivers, college\u00a0professors and lots more,\u201d he said. \u201cThe gospel truly brings everyone together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Local ministry focuses on once-a-month meals for the faculty and staff at the Lingleville\u00a0Independent School District. A live nativity\u00a0production tells the\u00a0whole story of Jesus, from His birth to the empty tomb, at Christmastime. The three-day\u00a0production saw about 1,200 people come through this\u00a0past December, the pastor said.<\/p>\n

Reaching beyond Lingleville, the church has taken mission trips to do maintenance work at a small associational camp in Oklahoma.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe main thing [we tell people] is who they are in Christ, how\u00a0important our relationship with the Lord is, that we\u2019re never so\u00a0far gone God can\u2019t meet us where we\u2019re at, and the importance\u00a0of going and sharing the good news,\u201d Hurt said. \u201cIt\u2019s the Great\u00a0Commission. The people here, when they\u00a0see\u2014when they understand\u2014what the Lord is doing, what He\u2019s\u00a0done, what He wants to do in and through us as faithful followers of Jesus empowered by the Holy Spirit, it changes everything.\u201d<\/p>\n
