Over the course of September, we will post several articles discussing the value (and the how-to) of mutigenerational ministry. A few months back, we spent some time looking at reaching and discipling young families. That is very important, but it can\u2019t be done at the expense of ignoring<\/em> older saints who have served God and His Church faithfully for decades.<\/p>\n

This is a delicate balance, and I\u2019m sure no pastor or church does this perfectly. However, I was reminded of the value and beauty of celebrating both older and younger saints.<\/p>\n

As we closed the Replant Summit in Alpharetta, Georgia, this week, Mark Clifton brought two replanting pastors onto the stage.<\/p>\n

One was a 79-year-old pastor named Leonard. The other was a 23-year-old pastor named Jesse. As far as we can tell, Leonard and Jesse were the oldest and youngest pastors present at our event. In an absolutely beautiful moment, Mark had Leonard pray over Jesse, then Jesse prayed over Leonard. Here\u2019s a picture of that moment:<\/p>\n

Sadly, there are churches across North America that would write each of these men off for one reason alone: their age. They\u2019re either too old or too young. And yet God is using both men to reach their communities, disciple believers and bring their churches back to life.<\/p>\n

So, pastor, look around your church. If you\u2019re in a season where you\u2019re trying to reach younger folks, how can you recognize and celebrate the dear older saints who have, perhaps, sacrificed many of their preferences to reach the community in a new and exciting way? How can you recognize and celebrate the young couples who are bringing new life and energy by serving in various ministries?<\/p>\n

In the gospels, we see Jesus caring for both little children and Peter\u2019s mother-in-law. Old and young, they all are a blessing to a local church and, ultimately, to the kingdom of God.<\/p>\n
