He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. <\/em>(Eccl. 3:11)<\/p>\n

Deep in our bones, we know we were created to live forever. It\u2019s why we are drawn to stories like Narnia and Frozen, in which death is ultimately a lie.<\/p>\n

But we don\u2019t just long to live forever, we also long to be productive forever. Now, we don\u2019t feel like this every day. Sin has made difficult both our work and our efforts to be productive. But something in our souls (and God\u2019s Word) shows us that work was meant to be \u201cvery good\u201d (see Gen. 1 and 2).<\/p>\n

I think we all have caught glimpses of what work must have been like prior to the Fall. You deliver a killer sales pitch and feel completely in your element. Or you finish writing a great chapter and can\u2019t wait to share it with your spouse. Or you hammer the last nail into a table and step back and admire your creation with healthy pride.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019ve experienced even just one of these moments, you know what it feels like to want work like that to last forever. You don\u2019t want it to end because we all know that we were put on this earth to do something \u2013 to \u201cmake a mark\u201d towards some end. Arthur Miller said it best in \u201cDeath of a Salesman\u201d when he wrote that our desire \u201cto leave a thumbprint somewhere on the world\u201d is a \u201cneed greater than hunger or sex or thirst \u2026 a need for immortality, and by admitting it, the knowing that one has carefully inscribed one\u2019s name on a cake of ice on a hot July day.\u201d<\/p>\n

All of this brings us to the first of five truths we\u2019ll see in this series: Our longing for timelessness is good and God-given. Ecclesiastes 3:11 makes this crystal clear, saying that God has \u201cset eternity in the human heart.\u201d In the words of Jen Wilkin, \u201cGod \u2026 has given time-bound humans a longing for timelessness.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is one of the main themes of the musical \u201cHamilton.\u201d Summarizing what he wants out of life, Alexander says, \u201cI wanna build something that\u2019s gonna outlive me.\u201d But Alexander\u2019s wife, Eliza, can\u2019t understand her husband\u2019s need for immortality. She urges her husband to \u201cJust stay alive; that would be enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

But we all know that\u2019s not enough. We know we weren\u2019t created just to stay alive and get through life. Something in our God-designed DNA tells us we were made for something more. To be human is to work with time, which our minds tell us is finite but our souls assure us shouldn\u2019t be.<\/p>\n

So why is time finite? That\u2019s the question we\u2019ll answer next week!<\/p>\n
