{"id":2513,"date":"2022-10-04T05:00:54","date_gmt":"2022-10-04T09:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.namb.net\/church-replanting\/?post_type=resource&#038;p=2513"},"modified":"2022-10-03T22:59:37","modified_gmt":"2022-10-04T02:59:37","slug":"5-biblical-truths-about-time-and-productivity-part-5-reading-the-gospels-as-biographies","status":"publish","type":"resource","link":"https:\/\/www.namb.net\/church-replanting\/resource\/5-biblical-truths-about-time-and-productivity-part-5-reading-the-gospels-as-biographies\/","title":{"rendered":"5 Biblical Truths About Time and Productivity, Part 5: Reading the Gospels as Biographies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I ended\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.namb.net\/church-replanting\/resource\/5-biblical-truths-about-time-and-productivity-part-4\/\">last week\u2019s post<\/a>\u00a0with a question: If the gospel compels us to \u201credeem our time\u201d (see Ephesians 5:16), where can we look for practical wisdom as to how to manage our time well?<\/p>\n<p>That question brings us to the fifth and final truth of this series: By studying the life of Christ,\u00a0<em>we can know how God would manage his time.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I know, this is a wild idea, so give me a minute to unpack it.<\/p>\n<p>John 1:14 tells us that God, the author of time, \u201cbecame flesh\u201d in the person of Jesus Christ. During his time on earth, Jesus was 100% God\u00a0<em>and<\/em>\u00a0100% man, meaning that he experienced the same day-to-day challenges as other mortals. He had a business to run, a mother and father to care for, hunger to manage, and the need for sleep. Oh yeah, and he faced the same twenty-four-hour time constraint as every other human being.<\/p>\n<p><em>OK Jordan, Jesus had a finite amount of time on earth. But surely the demands on his time can\u2019t compare to what we experience today, can they?\u00a0<\/em>Absolutely they can! Pastor Kevin DeYoung says that \u201cIf Jesus were alive today, he\u2019d get more e-mails than any of us. He\u2019d have people calling his cell all the time\u2026.Jesus did not float above the fray, untouched by the pressures of normal human existence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DeYoung\u2019s words bring to mind Hebrews 4:15 which says that \u201cwe do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses.\u201d In the person of Jesus, the Word became flesh, ensuring he could empathize with\u00a0<em>all\u00a0<\/em>of our weaknesses, including our efforts to steward 24 hours each day.<\/p>\n<p><em>OK Jordan, but do the gospels really have anything to say about how Jesus spent his time on earth?\u00a0<\/em>Now we\u2019re getting somewhere! Yes, they do\u2014quite a bit in fact. But in order to see it, we must adjust the lens through which we read the gospels.<\/p>\n<p>Pastor John Mark Comer has written extensively about how modern Christians read the gospels almost exclusively for their\u00a0<em>theology<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>ethics<\/em>. \u201cWe read [the gospels] as cute sermon illustrations or allegorical pick-me-ups or theological gold mines,\u201d Comer says. \u201c\u2026not bad, but we often miss the proverbial forest for the trees. [The gospels] are\u00a0<em>biographies<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And what do biographies show us? The\u00a0<em>lifestyle\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>habits<\/em>\u00a0of their subjects. The gospel biographies are our opportunity to see not just what Jesus said or what he did but\u00a0<em>how he walked,\u00a0<\/em>so that we can walk through life and manage our time the way he did.<\/p>\n<p><em>OK Jordan, then how did Jesus walk? How did he manage his time?\u00a0<\/em>That is the question we will explore in the next series here on The Word Before Work which kicks off next Monday.
