Church discipline \u2014 the very phrase sends a shiver down some spines. Questions arise about fairness, forgiveness, grace, compassion, and love. Accusations fly \u2014 of pride and divisiveness, self-righteousness and judgmentalism.<\/p>\n

And if we\u2019re honest, we fear what it will say about us, as a local church, if we appear to punish someone for sinning, when we know Jesus has forgiven\u00a0us\u00a0<\/em>of so much.<\/p>\n

The objections and hesitations are understandable, but they\u2019re also a bit too self-conscious. They betray a little too much concern with what other people think. Awash in the spirit of our non-judgmental age, church discipline feels acutely judgy, and that can\u2019t be good for business.<\/p>\n

But shouldn\u2019t we be concerned about our church\u2019s reputation in the local community? Jesus himself wants us to shine like a city on a hill whose light can\u2019t be hidden (Matt. 5:14-16). He wants the world to know we\u2019re His disciples by the way we love one another (John 13:34).<\/p>\n

So how does a commitment to the practice of church discipline relate to a right-headed care for the public reputation of a local church?<\/p>\n

Recently, I read 1 Corinthians 5 in my quiet time, and the apostle Paul confronted me with a different way of asking the same question. The question is\u00a0not<\/em>, \u201cWhat does it say about the church if we exercise discipline?\u201d but rather, \u201cWhat does it say about the church if we\u00a0neglect<\/em> church discipline?\u201d<\/p>\n

Paul says our\u00a0refusal<\/em>\u00a0to discipline unrepentant church members \u2014 by taking their names off the membership rolls, refusing to admit them to the Lord\u2019s Supper, and helping them see that their sin calls their professed faith into question \u2014 says at least eight bad things about us.<\/p>\n

Ironically, these eight things are precisely what we\u2019re afraid the world will think if we\u00a0do<\/em>\u00a0exercise church discipline.<\/p>\n

1. We think it\u2019s arrogant to discipline, but Paul thinks it\u2019s arrogant not<\/em>\u00a0to discipline<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The argument sounds something like this: \u201cWho are we to condemn the behavior of anyone else? Since we\u2019re all sinners, isn\u2019t it arrogant for any of us to single out someone else\u2019s sins as somehow worse than ours \u2014 as if theirs are worthy of public rebuke and ours aren\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n

Paul argues just the opposite in 1 Corinthians 5:1-2:\u00a0\u201c<\/em>For a man has his father\u2019s wife. And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from you.\u201d In other words, it\u2019s not arrogant to remove the man; it\u2019s arrogant\u00a0not<\/em>\u00a0to remove him. Why? Because the Corinthians thought they were being the \u201cbigger Christians\u201d by \u201cgiving him grace,\u201d perhaps as if \u201che who is most lenient with others is most humble himself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not so, says Paul. It\u2019s arrogant to let professing Christians get away with acting worse than non-Christians and re-naming\u00a0that<\/em> Christianity. That\u2019s not a humble submission to Scripture; that\u2019s over-writing Scripture.<\/p>\n

2. We think it\u2019s divisive to discipline, but Paul thinks it\u2019s divisive\u00a0not<\/em> to discipline.<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019d be easy to think that removing an unrepentant sinner is divisive. But Paul actually commands the Corinthians that \u201che who has done this be removed from among you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meditate on that phrase for a moment: \u201cremoved from among you.\u201d The preposition \u201camong\u201d implies that as long as this unrepentant sinner remains among you \u2014 talking as one of you, counted as one of you by others \u2014 then\u00a0he\u2019s<\/em>\u00a0the one sowing division. How? By introducing a pattern of rebellion where there should be a pattern of repentance. When a member makes peace with his own sin, it disturbs the peace of the church.<\/p>\n

3. We think it\u2019s foolish to discipline, but Paul thinks it\u2019s foolish\u00a0not<\/em> to discipline.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Our fallen assumption here is that the word will get out about us \u2014 we just couldn\u2019t be patient with a really bad sinner, or we\u2019re not a very forgiving church, or whatever. If even faithful discipline gets bad press, then why do it? Besides, who wants to come into a church where they make a practice of kicking people out? Talk about bad for business \u2014 how do you expect to grow a church\u00a0that<\/em>\u00a0way?<\/p>\n

But Paul had already made up his mind on the matter before he ever put pen to papyrus: \u201cI have already pronounced judgment on the one who did such a thing.\u201d It\u2019s obvious to Paul what you do when a fellow church member makes peace with his own outward, ongoing sin (he \u201chas\u201d his father\u2019s wife, present tense, ongoing). You should break peace with him, so that the world might respect the church for practicing what it preaches. That\u2019s wisdom, not foolishness<\/p>\n

4. We think it\u2019s unloving to discipline, but Paul thinks it\u2019s unloving not<\/em>\u00a0to discipline.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cDoesn\u2019t discipline violate the Golden Rule?\u201d Only if you want people to love you by patting you on your back while you sin yourself to hell. Too strong? Not at all. It\u2019s exactly what Paul implies in 1 Corinthians 5:5: \u201cYou are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.\u201d<\/p>\n

In other words, send the man into the world he seems to love so that he would become sick of his sin, repent, and be saved from hell when Jesus returns (cf<\/em>. Matt. 5:29-30; James 5:19-20). Repentance is a necessary response prior to redemption.<\/p>\n

5. We think it\u2019s unholy to discipline, but Paul thinks it\u2019s unholy\u00a0not<\/em> to discipline.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We might think of church discipline as engaging in dirty church politics, or acting on a personal vendetta. How dare we \u2014 and in the church no less!<\/p>\n

But listen again to Paul in 1 Corinthians 5:6-7, \u201cDo you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened.\u201d Sin spreads. Letting it metastasize is both dirty and deadly.<\/p>\n

6. We think it\u2019s hypocritical to discipline, but Paul thinks it\u2019s hypocritical\u00a0not<\/em>\u00a0to discipline.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cOh, that church is a bunch of phonies. They exclude people who aren\u2019t like them.\u201d To be fair, there\u00a0are<\/em>\u00a0hypocritical churches. But that\u2019s no reason to disagree with the Bible\u2019s clear teaching on discipline here in 1 Corinthians 5:8: \u201cLet us therefore celebrate the festival, not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lack of discipline creates an environment that excuses and nurtures hypocrisy. Sincere congregations discipline. Find\u00a0that<\/em> congregation, and chances are, you\u2019ve found a genuine church.<\/p>\n

7. We think it\u2019s confusing to discipline, but Paul thinks it\u2019s confusing\u00a0not<\/em>\u00a0to discipline.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAren\u2019t we confusing the world about God\u2019s goodness by treating our own with such severity?\u201d Not to Paul\u2019s way of thinking. Indeed, it\u2019s just the opposite: \u201cI am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler \u2014 not even to eat with such a one.\u201d<\/p>\n

It confuses the world to let someone identify as a Christian while he still identifies with his own sin. Was Christ immoral or greedy? Was Christ a reviler, a drunkard, or a swindler? The church should not complacently allow ungodly people to place Christ\u2019s name on themselves. That\u2019s confusing to the world.<\/p>\n

8. We think it\u2019s unjust to discipline, but Paul thinks it\u2019s unjust\u00a0not<\/em>\u00a0to discipline.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Isn\u2019t public, corrective discipline just the congregation ganging up on one helpless sinner? How is that fair? But the Bible says otherwise. Paul asks the question: \u201cIs it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? God judges those outside. Purge the evil person from among you\u201d (1 Cor. 5:12\u201313). Justice doesn\u2019t relinquish judgment. Justice requires judgment (John 7:24).<\/p>\n

The world might say bad things about the church if we discipline unrepentant members. But you know what? The world will also say bad things about the church that\u00a0doesn\u2019t<\/em>\u00a0discipline.<\/p>\n

And in some ways, they\u2019ll be echoing the displeasure of God.,<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
