My heart has been incredibly heavy over the state of our nation. I have friends and family on all sides of every issue, and seeing it all on display on social media is difficult to watch. So much of the back and forth—the hate, the pride, the lashing out—is disappointing, at best. I find myself...

I didn’t grow up dreaming of being in ministry. Yet looking back I can see how God faithfully prepared and equipped me for this unexpected calling of being a pastor’s wife and Bible teacher. There is abundant joy and satisfaction that comes from seeing God work to bring His bride into a closer...

In a small town outside Selma, Alabama, shortly after my dad graduated high school in 1960, my grandparents received a knock at the back door. Several men stood on the doorstep. I don't know every word that was said that evening, but I am painfully aware of these—"If I fill up your car with gas,...

There are many examples of bravery in the Bible. Esther. Moses. Ruth. Joseph. Rahab. Paul. The list goes on, and it's tempting for me (as one who likes her checklists) to look at each example and attempt to create a bravery profile; gather up all the goodness from each valiant story and implement...

It happened almost every Sunday morning. His cell phone would ring loudly in the middle of the sermon, set to Oh When the Saints Go Marching In. Sometimes, he would let it finish the chorus. Other times, he would answer it and begin his conversation as he walked down the center aisle toward the...

I’m a sucker for a candy bowl, especially if it involves chocolate and caramel. Recently, I found myself around a basket of snack-sized chocolate candy all weekend. The fragrant basket called out, “Eat me! Eat me!” and each time I walk past...

My pastor-man carries it well, the great responsibility of shepherding God’s people. He prepares the sermon for the week, visits the sick and home-bound, and is even found climbing the roof of the church to mend something flapping in...

The house is almost empty. Each space echoes our movements during the last hours of packing. Odds and ends need to find a cranny to fit in, while dust bunnies are swept away and long lost treasures are discovered under the beds. My heart is...
