But her memories of that night, the night she gave birth to her second child, are anything but typical.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing a military wife, you deal with things other women don\u2019t deal with,\u201d she says. \u201cHere I was with a one-year old, about to have another baby and my husband was in a combat zone in Iraq. And I think the hardest part was I couldn\u2019t just pick up the phone and say, \u2018Hey, we\u2019re about to have a baby.\u2019 That\u2019s why community is so important in a military town. I ended up having six women in the delivery room with me. And it was amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fast-forward to today, Brittany and Joshua Brown are planting a Send Network church in Sneads Ferry, North Carolina\u2014Pillar Church of Topsail. As church planting missionaries, they launched the church several years ago to reach military families stationed at nearby Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis little town we\u2019re in is pretty much all military,\u201d says Joshua. \u201cAnd the people who come to Camp Lejeune, they\u2019re 18 to 26 years old, they\u2019re away from mom and dad maybe for the very first time, and they don\u2019t have a support system. They need community desperately, and so it\u2019s a great opportunity to share the gospel with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Twenty years of being married to an active-duty Marine taught Brittany important lessons she now uses to share the gospel with military wives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we first started the church, I knew I wanted to be reaching women,\u201d she says, \u201cbecause I don\u2019t think people understand the emotional stress that there is on a military spouse. The deployments, the constant transition and moving from place to place\u2014it really is a different way of life and I get it. So, it\u2019s not a shocker when I meet someone whose husband is leaving for nine months or when I hear, \u2018Hey, I\u2019m going to have a baby and I need someone to take my two kids and someone to be in the delivery room with me.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andrea Manias understands perfectly what Brittany is talking about. Andrea and her husband, Adam, have five children, ages one to ten\u2014\u201cI\u2019m no superhero,\u201d Andrea insists\u2014and because of his career field in the Marines, he\u2019s frequently gone for months at a time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes, I don\u2019t know where he is,\u201d Andrea says. \u201cAnd other times I kind of wish I didn\u2019t know where he was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Andrea gave birth to their fifth child, Adam was preparing for a deployment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur son came a month early and he ended up having to be in the NICU,\u201d Andrea says. \u201cWe don\u2019t have family that lives nearby and we had four other children at home we couldn\u2019t just abandon. And the people at Pillar Church dropped everything to help. They took care of our kids; they took care of our house; they did everything. And Adam and I, all we could say was, \u2018Wow.\u2019 We\u2019d never seen the hands and feet of Jesus in that capacity before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is what the work of church planting looks like in a military community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe help women like Andrea whose husbands are gone,\u201d Brittany says. \u201cWe watch their kids; we mow their lawns; if something breaks, we help fix it. We even have chainsaws and pressure washers and weed whackers that we help them use, because when you\u2019re moving from one base to another, you don\u2019t own those things. I know that all might sound weird, but that\u2019s what day-to-day ministry looks like for us. That\u2019s how we create opportunities to share the gospel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meeting needs, sharing Christ, and building an extended family for military wives who might otherwise be on their own\u2014that turned out to be Brittany\u2019s role in the mission God called her and her husband to.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know when people think of church planting, they think of the pastor who plants, but maybe not the wife,\u201d Brittany says. \u201cBut this is not just Joshua\u2019s job. For both of us, this is a way of life.\u00a0 We\u2019re doing everything we can for the cause of Christ in this area to reach not just members of the military but their families too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, even though all is not perfect or easy on the Manias\u2019s home front, life is as it should be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t have it all together and we probably never will,\u201d Andrea says. \u201cA lot is asked not just of the military personnel but their family as well. That\u2019s why it\u2019s so important to have a church that understands military life. I\u2019ve thought about that a lot, about how hard it\u2019d be to not have someone who understands this lifestyle. Like, just our normal day-to-day stuff, how do you do it without a church community and not go crazy?
