God is raising up faithful leaders and churches who are embracing simplicity\u2014not out of limitation, but out of conviction.\u00a0Covocational\u00a0church strategies\u00a0aren\u2019t\u00a0shortcuts or compromises;\u00a0they\u00a0are strategic choices to steward time, gifting, and resources for Kingdom impact. The\u00a0covocational\u00a0church, where I serve as one of the Elders, has strong ecclesiology, practices meaningful\u00a0membership, and\u00a0is on mission in the community and world. We have no full-time staff,\u00a0a membership\u00a0below 150, and a budget of less than $250,000. These realities have not stopped\u00a0our\u00a0church from planting churches, giving to missions, and sending out missionaries in a significant way for a church our size. Our model has been instrumental in allowing us to have\u00a0kingdom\u00a0impact despite our size and resources.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

10 Realities<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Here are 10 realities we review with our staff and leadership each year that convey what it means to be part of a\u00a0covocational\u00a0church:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Determine to have realistic expectations. This determines your level of joy.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Because we\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0have full-time staff, there must be a foundation of realistic expectations. The\u00a0covocational\u00a0model means there are tasks and ministry efforts that might not be\u00a0accomplished\u00a0as professionally or as\u00a0timely\u00a0as in a fully staffed church. Setting clear expectations in the\u00a0church\u00a0body is critical. Unrealistic expectations can lead to bitterness and steal our joy.\u00a0Communicate regularly to your church and\u00a0team\u00a0the reality of\u00a0covocational\u00a0church\u00a0ministry.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Embrace relationships over programs.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      This is a radical shift in a culture where people often choose a church based on its programs.\u00a0The\u00a0covocational\u00a0church model will have fewer programs and lean heavily into relational\u00a0ministry and discipleship. Relationships are essential in the New Testament\u2014with over 100\u00a0\u201cone another\u201d passages\u2014making it clear that being in community and doing ministry together is\u00a0the biblical pattern. Help your church family cultivate meaningful relationships built on shared\u00a0selflessness, not consumerism.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Be content with base hit sermons. Don\u2019t expect home runs every Sunday.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Faithful, Christ-centered exposition is the goal. Most\u00a0covocational\u00a0pastors balance multiple\u00a0roles, and preparation time is often limited.\u00a0Don\u2019t\u00a0let the pressure of hitting a grand slam every\u00a0week\u00a0derail\u00a0you from faithfully preparing, praying, and delivering the Word. If the Word is rightly\u00a0divided and Christ is exalted,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0a win. Consistency over time\u00a0bears\u00a0fruit. Base hits edify the\u00a0church and move the mission forward.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

          \n
        1. Realize there will always be more to do\u2014take initiative or offer solutions.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          You will either develop a critical spirit or become a constructive solution-giver. There will be\u00a0gaps in ministry that will drive you crazy. Instead of being critical, look for solutions.\u00a0Covocational\u00a0church ministry is a team effort, and teams thrive when people lead with\u00a0initiative and grace.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

            \n
          1. Build teams. Equip and empower others.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            Ephesians 4\u00a0reminds\u00a0us that leaders exist to equip the saints for ministry. A healthy\u00a0church depends on\u00a0a culture\u00a0of equipping and empowering. Years ago, I came across a\u00a0leadership article that said,\u00a0\u201cstop using the word delegate\u2014become a person who\u00a0empowers!\u201d\u00a0That quote was transformational for me. Empowerment carries a different meaning\u00a0and weight than delegation.\u00a0Delegation assigns tasks; empowerment raises leaders. Train\u00a0others to lead and release them with trust\u2014that is empowerment.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

              \n
            1. Be a grace-giver and a quick forgiver.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              Because ministry needs never stop and vocational work responsibilities are ever-present,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0easy for tensions and comparisons to find a foothold. Practicing grace\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0optional\u2014it\u2019s\u00a0essential. Forgive quickly. Assume the best.\u00a0Don\u2019t\u00a0let small offenses grow into division. A culture\u00a0of grace builds trust, unity, and a gospel-shaped community.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

                \n
              1. Submit to the elders as shepherds for your soul\u2014authoritarian vs. authority.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                Elders\u00a0aren\u2019t\u00a0here for control, but for care. Hebrews 13:17 calls us to\u00a0submit\u00a0to godly\u00a0leadership\u2014not because they are perfect, but because they are accountable before God for\u00a0your\u00a0soul. This is spiritual authority, not authoritarianism. Christ-like, humble elders are a gift to\u00a0the church. Realize God has raised them up to help shepherd and care for the flock.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

                  \n
                1. Embrace your context.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                  Every context has challenges to navigate. Our city is a very transitional city. On average, we lose\u00a0a third of our church every three years. That means our focus must stay on equipping, sending,\u00a0and\u00a0multiplying. We realize people may be here for\u00a0a short time. Is it discouraging and sad at\u00a0times?\u00a0Absolutely. But we are called to live sent as God\u2019s people, so we embrace the transient\u00a0nature of our city and steward it for gospel advancement. We like to say we have a culture of\u00a0development that leads to deployment.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

                    \n
                  1. Communication is key!<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                    In a team-based,\u00a0covocational\u00a0model, clear and personal communication is\u00a0everything. We hold once-a-month staff meetings, which means we must work hard to\u00a0communicate with one another during the week. Cultivating good systems and rhythms\u00a0for communication is key to staying unified and\u00a0mission-focused.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

                      \n
                    1. Excellence isn\u2019t a value, but mediocrity isn\u2019t glorifying.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                      Do things well for the glory of God.\u00a0We\u2019re\u00a0not chasing perfection\u2014but\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0not making excuses either. Whatever we do, we do for\u00a0the glory of God (1 Cor. 10:31). Whether\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0preaching, leading a meeting, setting up chairs, or\u00a0writing\u00a0curriculum\u2014give your best. Faithful stewardship honors Christ.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

                      The\u00a0covocational\u00a0church model may not appear flashy or impressive by worldly\u00a0standards\u2014but it is deeply faithful, sustainable, and effective when rooted in biblical convictions\u00a0and gospel purpose. It requires humility, clarity, teamwork, and perseverance. But the reward is\u00a0great: a church that is formed by grace, committed to mission, and shaped by simplicity. May we\u00a0steward our time, resources, and callings with joy as we labor for Christ and His Kingdom.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
