“But those who trust in the Lord will renew their strength; they will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not become weary, they will walk and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31).
Application: There is no power in the present without hope in the future.
Trends in Public Service Chaplaincy
- Chaplaincy in Public Schools: More people are interested in having chaplains in public schools. A recent poll shows that Americans have mixed feelings about religion in schools. In 2023, Texas became the first state to allow chaplains to counsel students in public schools. Florida and Louisiana passed similar laws in 2024.
- Church Support for Chaplains: More churches are giving chaplains letters of support instead of official recognition from a denomination. This change can cause legal and support problems that many churches aren’t ready to handle. (Why Become an SBC Chaplain?)
- Changing Religious Landscape: Fewer Americans are going to church or saying religion is important in their lives. At the same time, people still need spiritual care, which shows how important chaplains are today. (Gallup Poll, June 11, 2025)
